Ohio announced the first winners of one of five $1 million lottery prizes and one of five fullride scholarships for people who received the coronavirus vaccine.

Joseph Costello of Englewood entered the sweepstakes and claimed the first scholarship, the Ohio Lottery announced on TV Wednesday night. The award is to any state-run university for Ohioans 12 to 17 who are vaccinated.

It includes tuition, room and board and books.

The winner of the $1 million prize was Abbigail Bugenske of Silverton in suburban Cincinnati.

Gov. Mike DeWine announced the lottery plan earlier this month to boost interest in COVID-19 vaccinations, which had started to slow.

The move received national attention, but some members of DeWine’s Republican party threatened lawsuits or other action in an attempt to stop it.

The winners of the next drawings will be announced June 2, June 9, June 16 and June 23.
